Why Yoga is so good for kids...

Yoga is often seen as a peaceful, calming practice, but did you know that it's also a fantastic way for kids to build strength, coordination, and emotional resilience? At Poppy Kids, I offer a fun and lively Yoga class designed to support children’s physical and emotional growth. It’s all about empowering kids with the tools they need to feel strong, confident, and balanced!
So, let’s dive into why Yoga is so beneficial for kids’ development!
When kids practice Yoga, they’re not just stretching – they’re developing vital physical skills like balance, strength, and coordination. Poses like tree pose, downward dog, and warrior require them to balance, strengthen their muscles, and focus on moving in and out of different postures. These movements help develop gross motor skills, which are essential for running, jumping, and playing sports.
Yoga also helps with fine motor skills – those tiny movements like gripping, holding, and touching. As kids practice more detailed poses, they learn how to control their hands and fingers, improving their hand-eye coordination, which is super helpful for tasks like drawing, writing, or even tying their shoelaces!
Yoga isn’t just about bending and stretching – it’s also about learning how to calm down and stay focused. For kids who can be easily distracted or are still learning how to handle big feelings, Yoga offers a gentle way to practice emotional regulation. Breathing exercises and simple mindfulness activities, like being still and noticing the breath, teach kids how to manage their emotions and stay calm even when things get a little hectic.
In our class, we’ll explore how to balance both fun, high-energy games and moments of stillness. This helps kids learn that there’s a right place for both – sometimes, it’s time to play and be active, and other times, it’s time to sit quietly and relax. Yoga teaches kids that both are important, and they can enjoy both without feeling overwhelmed!
Did you know that Yoga can also help kids sleep better? By introducing mindful movements and relaxing stretches, Yoga can help kids wind down and prepare for a peaceful night’s sleep. Learning how to relax and release tension in the body encourages restful sleep, making it easier for kids to fall asleep and stay asleep.
In our Poppy Kids Yoga class, we’ll end with a calming chill time – a peaceful moment where we guide kids through a gentle relaxation or meditation. It’s the perfect way to prepare them for bedtime, helping them feel calm, relaxed, and ready to sleep soundly.
As kids become familiar with different poses and start mastering them, they gain a sense of accomplishment and confidence. Yoga helps children feel good about their bodies, promoting self-awareness and a positive relationship with movement. The fun, playful nature of the class means that kids can be themselves while trying new things, without feeling the pressure to “get it right” every time.
Yoga is not about competition – it’s about celebrating each child’s unique abilities and helping them connect with their own strengths and abilities, which ultimately builds self-esteem and a sense of pride.
My childrens' Yoga classes are all about balance. I'm keen for them to have fun, play, and learn, while also gaining the benefits of mindfulness, calm, and focus.
